1. Highlights from BAGNC Leadership Conference & GSA
BAGNC Leadership Conference
More than 150 nurse scholars and leaders participated in the 2011 BAGNC Leadership Conference, held in Boston, November 16-18. This year’s conference focused on Skills Building for the Future of Nursing, as outlined in the Institute of Medicine’s recent report.
One of the highlights of the conference was participation by two of nursing’s greats in the Mary Starke Harper Distinguished Lectureship. Through Claire M. Fagin, PhD, RN, FAAN’s honest and probing conversation with Mathy Mezey, EdD, RN, FAAN, attendees were able to learn not only about Mathy Mezey’s enormous contributions to the field of gerontological nursing, but also about how she developed into a great leader.
Marilyn Rantz Received the American Academy of Nursing’s Nurse Leadership in Aging Award
Marilyn Rantz, PhD, RN, FAAN, professor and Helen E. Nahm Chair at the University of Missouri’s Sinclair School of Nursing, received the AAN 2011 Nurse Leadership in Aging Award BAGNC Leadership Conference. This annual award recognizes leadership and significant achievements, contributions, productivity, competence, and mentorship in the field of aging. Dr. Rantz is one of the country’s leading experts on quality improvement interventions for residents in nursing homes; her aging in place program earned the American Academy of Nursing Edge Runner distinction in 2008.
Mathy Mezey Presented Address for GSA’s 2010 Donald P. Kent Award
On November 21, Mathy Mezey, EdD, RN, FAAN, Hartford Institute, NYU College of Nursing, delivered her address for the 2010 Donald P. Kent Award. This distinguished honor is given annually to a GSA member who best exemplifies the highest standards for professional leadership in gerontology through teaching, service, and interpretation of gerontology to the larger society. Dr. Mezey is the first nurse to receive this award. In her address, she spoke about accomplishments—drawing care of older adults into the mainstream of health professional education and practice—and discussed the future—redefining gerontology/geriatrics as a specialty.
Terry Fulmer Received the Doris Schwartz Gerontological Nursing Research Award
The 2011 Doris Schwartz Gerontological Nursing Research Award was presented to Terry Fulmer, PhD, RN, FAAN, in recognition of her outstanding and sustained contribution to geriatric nursing research, particularly in elder mistreatment and in interdisciplinary care of older adults. Dr. Fulmer is the former Dean of NYU College of Nursing and is now dean of Northeastern University Bouvé College of Health Sciences.
Fang Yu Received Springer Award in Geriatric/Gerontologic Nursing
Fang Yu, PhD, GNP-BC, RN, received the Springer Award in Geriatric/Gerontologic Nursing, for her 2010 article, “Correlating heart rate and perceived exertion during aerobic exercise in Alzheimer's disease.” This annual award was presented by Springer Publishing Company at GSA’s Nursing Care of Older Adults Interest Group Meeting, in recognition of a distinguished single work of research in applied geriatric nursing. Dr. Yu was a BAGNC Fellow from 2004 to 2007 and is a faculty member of the University of Minnesota School of Nursing’s Center for Gerontological Nursing.
Nursing Care of Older Adults Interest Group Meeting
The Nursing Care of Older Adults Interest Group meeting welcomed more than 300 geriatric nurses, with a networking reception, sponsored by the John A. Hartford Foundation; Sigma Theta Tau International; Bouvé College of Health Sciences at Northeastern University; New York University College of Nursing; and the Doris Schwartz Gerontological Nursing Research Award Endowment, followed by the meeting. The highlight of the meeting was the presentation of the Doris Schwartz Gerontological Nursing Research Award to Dr. Terry Fulmer (see above).
HGNI Exhibit Booth
HGNI shared an exhibit booth with the Hartford Social Work Initiative, sponsored by the John A. Hartford Foundation. Hosted by rotating programs’ staff and scholars, it was an excellent opportunity to share information and network with each other, as well as with many visitors.

Scholars spent the next three months integrating gero content into one course syllabus. According to one scholar, “My increased knowledge and confidence in gero topics and resources is and will be valuable in all the courses I teach. I will be looking for opportunities to add gero to any course I teach.”
