New Days/New Ways: Advancing Care Excellence for Seniors (ACES) Workshops Register Now!
Two workshops, “New Days/New Ways: Advancing Care Excellence for Seniors (ACES),” are being offered this summer–June 11, 2010 in Philadelphia, PA, and June 25, 2010 in Altamonte Springs, FL. These workshops introduce a new framework for the care of older adults using an array of excellent Hartford Foundation-funded resources developed by the AACN and Hartford Institute. ACES is an initiative of the Fostering Geriatrics in Pre-licensure Nursing Education grant, a partnership between the National League for Nursing and Community College of Philadelphia, funded by The John A. Hartford Foundation, Laerdal Medical Corporation and the Independence Foundation of Philadelphia to foster gerontological nursing education for pre-licensure nursing programs. To register for the Philadelphia workshop on June 11, 2010, go to: www.nln.org/facultydevelopment/Workshops/aces_pa/index.htm. New Resources from the Geropsychiatric Nursing Collaborative
The Geropsychiatric Nursing Collaborative has developed the following resources to draw attention to the special needs of older adults with mental health concerns and psychiatric/substance misuse disorders.

  • Geropsychiatric Nursing Competency Enhancements. These enhancements are not intended to stand alone, but rather to enhance existing or to-be-developed competencies by relevant professional nursing organizations.

  • Key Concepts. These key concepts are foundational to the geropsychiatric nursing competency enhancements.

  • Definition of Geropsychiatric Nursing. This definition serves to guide future discussions about preparing nurses to care for older adults with mental health concerns.

These resources will be available on the Portal of Geriatric Online Education (www.POGOe.org) in mid-April under the product ID 20660. You must register to search for the product, but registration is free. Questions? Contact Pamela Dudzik at pdudzik@aannet.org.

    3. Announcements

    AACN Announces New Project
The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) is pleased to announce the initiation of a two-year John A. Hartford Foundation funded project focused on assisting nurse faculty in their work to prepare Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) to care for older adults. Phase II of the Ensuring the Advanced Practice Registered Nursing Workforce is Prepared to Care For Older Adults initiative focuses on enhancing gerontology content and facilitating curriculum redesign in programs graduating Nursing Practitioners (NPs) and Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNSs). Phase II of this project will provide resources and activities to ensure that APRN educators have the knowledge, skills, and teaching tools needed to modify existing adult NP and CNS programs to include a strong focus on gerontology. To accomplish the above goals, AACN, in collaboration with the Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing, New York University College of Nursing, will develop clinical modules, web-based resources, and case studies specifically to assist faculty through the transition period. AACN will also host four faculty development workshops to better prepare faculty from adult NP and CNS programs to implement the newly required Adult-Gerontology curriculum.

During Phase I of the Ensuring the APRN Nursing Workforce is Prepared to Care For Older Adults grant, AACN, also in collaboration with the Hartford Institute, worked to advance the recommendations related to APRN education contained in the Consensus Model for APRN Regulation: Licensure, Accreditation, Certification & Education, which was developed through a five-year, collaborative process involving multiple nursing organizations. In Phase I, AACN has led the development of consensus-based competencies for Adult-Gerontology NPs and Adult-Gerontology CNSs using a national validation process that encompasses a wide array of stakeholders from NP and CNS education, practice, certification, accreditation, and licensure. The anticipated release of the competencies is April 2010.
