4. Opportunities, Resources & Tools

AACN’s GNEC Faculty Training Institutes Draw Crowds in Portland and Atlanta: Apply Now for St. Louis
The first two Geriatric Nursing Education Consortium (GNEC) Institutes were both oversubscribed and very well-reviewed by participants. The Portland event, held June 27-29, 2007, attracted 138 nurse faculty; 140 attended the Atlanta session October 3-5, 2007. One hundred and fifty-six schools of nursing and all but eight states have been represented thus far.

GNEC is an innovative national initiative to enhance geriatric content in senior-level baccalaureate courses. Administered by AACN, this program provides nursing educators with the skills, knowledge, and resources needed to ensure that the best geriatric practices are imbedded in baccalaureate curricula and subsequently in the clinical care provided by newly educated nurses. Using a train-the-trainer approach, nurse faculty attending the GNEC institutes are expected to serve as leaders and mentors by sharing their new expertise with colleagues. This program is generously funded by The John A. Hartford Foundation.

AACN is now accepting online applications for the October 2008 GNEC Faculty Development Institute: October 14-16, 2008, in St. Louis, MO. (Please note the change in dates for the October 2008 institute, originally scheduled for October 8-10, 2008.) The deadline is May 26, 2008. Nurse educators interested in applying to attend the upcoming GNEC training Institute are encouraged to register early.
