4. Opportunities, Resources & Tools

Apply for Faculty Development Institutes Online!
The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) is accepting online applications for the upcoming Faculty Development Institutes offered through the Foundation-funded Geriatric Nursing Education Consortium (GNEC). GNEC is an innovative national initiative to enhance geriatric content in senior-level baccalaureate courses. Administered by AACN, this program provides nursing educators with the skills, knowledge, and resources needed to ensure that the best geriatric practices are embedded in baccalaureate curricula and subsequently in the clinical care provided by newly educated nurses. Using a train-the-trainer approach, nurse faculty attending the GNEC institutes are expected to serve as leaders and mentors by sharing their new expertise with colleagues. The next two institutes are scheduled for February 27-29, 2008 in San Antonio, TX and October 14-16, 2008 in St. Louis, MO. Please note the change in dates for the October 2008 institute, which was originally scheduled for October 8-10, 2008.

The application deadline for the San Antonio institute has been extended to Monday, November 5, 2007.

For more information visit the GNEC Web site:

    Hartford Institute Prepares New Edition of Evidence-Based Geriatric Nursing Protocols for Best Practice
    The Hartford Institute engaged some of the top clinician-scientists in the country to evaluate the best evidence of care for the most prevalent clinical problems and syndromes faced by older adults. The findings will be published in the third edition of evidence-based geriatric nursing protocols for best practice. Each of the 29 chapters includes educational objectives, assessment of the problem, nursing intervention or care strategies, extensive references, and resources. Most chapters also have case studies. Although the primary audience is acute care nurses, it should be utilized by educators for geriatric nursing courses and advance practice nurses, as well as other disciplines. The protocols will be available in November 2007 from Springer Publishing Company.

    Mayday Fund Supports Nursing Home Collaborative Pain Initiatives
    The American Academy of Nursing was awarded $153,954 over two years from the
    Mayday Fund (www.maydayfund.org) to support the Nursing Home Collaborative Pain Initiatives. The four initiatives are:
  • to compile the research-based literature on intervention components that have been successful in increasing the assessment and management of pain in nursing homes;
  • to review current pain assessment tools as well as existing quality improvement resources in order to produce a compilation of current research-based pain assessment and management tools;
  • to develop a central place where nursing homes can access the best assessment tools and quality improvement resources compiled in the second initiative; and
  • to develop a user-friendly “tool kit” that would assist front-line nursing staff in implementing these research-supported best practices at the bedside, thus helping to achieve the campaign’s quality indicators.

    Lisa Kelley, a 2003-2005 John A. Hartford Foundation Scholar, and Kathy Clark were just notified of funding by Wellmark Foundation for a 2007 Capacity Building Grant titled “Building Sudanese Community Capacity for Diabetes Identification, Prevention, and Care.” The purpose of this project is to collect comprehensive data on the prevalence of diabetes, prevalence of traditional health risks for diabetes and health beliefs/practices regarding diabetes prevention and care in a growing Sudanese immigrant/refugee community. This data will be used to develop a community capacity building diabetes protocol (to include a community-based diabetes education program) for future testing in other Iowa Sudanese communities.

    Sherry Pomeroy (2005-2007 Fellow) was selected as a Community Health Foundation Health Leadership Fellow through May 2009 (18 months). She will be participating in a variety of leadership assessments, workshops, projects, etc. to build networks and collaboration with other health professionals (from agencies, hospitals, universities, etc.) in western and central New York who are committed to improving care of frail older adults. The foundation also issues RFPs; see www.chfwcny.org. Dr. Pomeroy also received funding from Beechwood Health Care Inc. to pilot test “Welcome Home + Restorative Care.” This will build on the work she did within the last year to test Dr. Barbara Resnick's restorative care intervention as part of her recently completed AHRQ grant.
