End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC) Geriatrics Training
The End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC), a project of the City of Hope National Medical Center, in partnership with the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, is offering its first ever ELNEC-Geriatrics training program. This train-the-trainer course will provide staff with information and resources to provide excellent end-of-life/palliative care nursing education and prepare staff to provide the highest quality end-of-life care to their residents. A variety of teaching methods will be used, including review of case studies, roundtable discussions, role plays and viewing of videos.
The educational goals of this two-day course include:
Defining essential content for the highest quality end-of-life geriatric nursing care;
Exploring creative teaching/learning strategies for use in end-of-life care education;
Describing strategies for overcoming barriers to integration of end-of-life care education within long-term care settings and skilled nursing facilities; and
Providing tools for geriatric nursing educators to facilitate end-of-life care nursing education.
The first course, funded by the California HealthCare Foundation (for California nurses only), will be held February 1-2, 2007, with 100 geriatric nurses and other members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team from across the state of California participating. For more information and an application, due December 1, 2006, go to: www.aacn.nche.edu/ELNEC/pdf/07GeriatricApp.pdf.
Nurses from states other than California are invited to participate in the second course, scheduled for September 12-14, 2007, in Pasadena, CA. For more information about this project, go to: www.aacn.nche.edu/ELNEC.
ELNEC is a national education initiative to improve end-of-life care in the United States. The project provides undergraduate and graduate nursing faculty, CE providers, staff development educators, pediatric and oncology-specialty nurses, and other nurses with training in end-of-life care so they can teach this essential information to nursing students and practicing nurses.
Try This!
With flu season approaching, it is critical to remember the importance of influenza vaccination for older adults. A flu vaccine can prevent between 70 percent and 90 percent of flu illnesses, according to the CDC. The Try This assessment series includes recommended immunization practices for older adult patients. AACN to Offer Gerontology Faculty Development Institutes
The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) is pleased to announce the dates and locations of the first three Faculty Development Institutes offered through the Geriatric Nursing Education Consortium (GNEC). Part of the HGNI, the GNEC is an innovative national initiative to enhance geriatric content in senior-level courses. Administered by AACN, this expertly designed program’s intent is to arm a cadre of nursing educators with the skills, knowledge, and resources to ensure that the best geriatric practices are embedded within the framework of the senior-level curricula and subsequently in the clinical care provided by our newly educated nursing workforce. Using a “train-the-trainer” approach, an estimated 600 nurse faculty attending the GNEC institutes are expected to serve as leaders and mentors by sharing their new expertise with colleagues at their home institutions. This program is generously funded by The John A.
Hartford Foundation through a $2.6 million grant titled "Enhancing Gerontology Content in Senior-level Baccalaureate Courses." The first three Institutes are scheduled for June 27-29, 2007, in Portland, OR; October 3-5, 2007, in Atlanta, GA; and February 27-29, 2008, in San Antonio, TX. For more information on this program, visit www.aacn.nche.edu/Education/Hartford/gnec.htm.
Webcast: The Older Adult, Dementia, and Assisted Bathing The Older Adult, Dementia, and Assisted Bathing looks at the often negative experience of bathing for older adults with dementia. The video outlines cutting-edge research and presents best practices in bathing from researchers and practitioners, as well as guidance from the perspective of a state regulatory agency on what actually constitutes compliance with relevant standards of care.
This program and all others in the New Look at the Old series will remain available, on demand, through 2007. If you have any questions about the broadcast (or the associated print series), please contact Katherine Kany, project manager, at 703.729.6050 or katherinekany@adelphia.net.
